CASE STUDY: San Jose Water & Electrical Signature Analysis

Annually, San Jose Water saw five (5) to twenty (20) motor-pumps fail. These failures forced SJW into frequent major repairs and replacements, causing increased asset downtime, and dependence on less-efficient secondary motor-pumps. SJW is shifting from a costly reactive maintenance strategy to a predictive maintenance approach with online monitoring. This strategy improves uptime, reduces costly unplanned downtime, and optimizes asset utilization.

CASE STUDY: EASYchange with Brush Condition Monitoring prevents damage to brushes, rigging, and collector rings

Within 30 months, four (4) brush rigging events occurred at two (2) Exelon sites. Each site had a water ingress issue causing damaged brushes, rigging, and collectors. After one of the sites had a flashover event, the company implemented Cutsforth EASYchange and Brush Condition Monitoring.

CASE STUDY: Infrared (IR) Monitoring

A large Midwest power generation utility wanted to improve early detection of reliability issues with its transformers and switchyard assets. Upon deploying the Cutsforth and Optris IR monitoring system, the plant discovered loose busbar connections and loose connections on drops from HV lines to GSU bushings. Personnel also found malfunctioning rad fans. These findings led to immediate action from plant personnel, avoiding catastrophic failure and increasing overall performance of the assets.

CASE STUDY: Addressing Reliability Demands and Optimizing Workforce Activities

Duke Energy networked thousands of rugged CompactRIO measurement systems in the field with InsightCM to provide 24×7 pre-screened data to the maintenance team. Full waveform data is available over the network to subject matter experts and to other software technology used as part of the Duke Energy maintenance program. Over three years, Duke Energy had total avoided costs 130% above the capital budget, primarily due to avoiding the higher costs associated with failures. The third year of the project was when Duke Energy began to see a significant pick-up in payback.

Customer Testimonials

"We have nothing but great things to say about the Cutsforth™ brush systems here. Low costs, easy to maintain and no issues whatsoever."

P.B., MAINTENANCE SUPERINTENDENT, MIDWEST POWER PLANT

"I used to spend about 50-70% of my time traveling to analyze issues. Now, with InsightCM, that's down to about 20%. It's also valuable to us and our customers to not have to wait 4-5 hours to start a 500MW unit. Everybody wins."

C.R., VIBRATION ANALYST, MIDWEST POWER PLANT

"Cutsforth provided the high quality and individual detail that customers have learned to expect from a focused and dedicated subject matter expert. The close attention to detail resulted in our finding and repairing several other problems that could have been the root cause of past collector ring and brush problems."

T.P., Principal Engineer, Large East Coast Power Producer

"The shaft grounding systems are working very well right now. Thanks for the smooth installation and the support. Cutsforth is excellent and you have a very good reputation here."

J.W., Senior Engineer, SE Power Plant

"It would be unfair not to say that in my 20 years in this business - I'm an ex-GE electrical engineer - this is the first time I had a job from a company with unmatched response time, highly professional technicians, and more than 100% service satisfaction."

K.P., Electrical Engineer, Consulting Company

"More informed replacement schedules optimize asset lifetime and performance, thereby reducing operational costs and business risk from unexpected failures."

Ethan Smith, EIT, Captial Planning Engineer, San Jose Water

"Safety wise, [Brush Condition Monitoring] is a great system. We're not changing our brushes as often and our guys don't have to stick their hands in the machines to change them. We're able to change the brushes on an as needed basis, instead of an arbitrary number of brushes each month. We're seeing some O&M savings as well. We're probably able to save about 1/3 of our O&M budget since our operators aren't having to go out and check on the brushes as often. Our operators really like the system."

John Wilcox, O&M Superintendent, AEP Dresden (OH)
